Baby Showers are a Waste of Time and Resources

Baby Showers

Recently I saw a comment on social media along the lines of holding baby showers is a waste of time and resources. The person suggested that people should have business showers to celebrate entrepreneurship Instead.

I like the idea of celebrating entrepreneurship. I like the idea of coming together to support a friend with resources to start a new venture. My question is, should one thing replace another?

My point is that being social beings, we value the different expressions of friendship. Holding baby showers is one of the many expressions of friendship.  It’s surrounding yourself with positive influencers whose attributes eventually rub off on you.

The aspect of surprising a  mother-to-be with your presence and gifts is heartwarming. It is not even about the gifts, it is more about the thought behind the whole event.

Some initiatives like Still A Mum hold rainbow baby showers. Rainbow babies are babies gotten after a miscarriage. The baby showers are held for a group of mothers who are expecting rainbow babies. They get to talk to gynecologists, nutritionists, and other specialists during the events. This promotes safe motherhood.

See what the evolution of an idea from one concept can do? Ideas are great and people need to act on them. If the idea to start business showers appeals to you, then by all means, start it. I even think that it is already being done in chamas– small investment groups. Just don’t discredit other peoples’ choices of expressing friendship.

We would be doing a disservice to our social lives if we decided to block certain aspects and concentrate on others. I think that we need to be balanced in life. Having some extreme point-of-view makes one come out as a bitter person who is not happy for others. I will talk about some reasons for women not wanting to be involved in such celebrations in a later post.

I am not discounting the fact that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and the right to express it. On the flip side, judging other people for their choices is also wrong. You don’t know everyone’s story.

The ‘Business Idea’ that was a surprise baby shower.

Synopsis is her favourite word at work, so her colleagues temporarily nick-named her unborn baby.

My sister is in her third trimester. Over the weekend, we held a suprise baby shower for her, that didn’t turn out as planned, yet was still a big surprise.

Planning a surprise is a hard task, if you already know how difficult it is to surprise a person who knows and openly vows that no one can surprise them. Her workmate approached me on Facebook and shared the idea that I had been toying with for a month- what were we doing in the days of no technology? God bless Zukerberg.

We formed a WhatsApp group in January and added close friends who contributed toward the big surprise. Each one was to buy a gift of their choice for the day.

The problem with groups that have people who have never met, is that sometimes it gets so quiet you can cut  through the thickness of the silence.

We had the challenge of holding on to our phones so that she doesn’t accidentally see the group. She got curious of why people were denying her access to their phones, but could not connect the dots. I even had to suggest that we change the name of the group to something other than ‘Sellah’s baby shower’, just to be on the safe side.

The successful ‘business idea’ that was full of laughter.

One brilliant colleague of hers changed the name to ‘Business Ideas’. This was so hilarious. Thinking of it later, I thought of what collaboration between ladies can result to. Something great.

Sunday March 5, 2017 was the planned day. I spent the night in her house, and woke up to tidy the house. She woke up an hour later and found me busy at work. She never suspected anything. We had someone to pick her and take her for a pedicure, while others sneak into her house to do the decorations and prepare the snacks.

She didn’t even spend thirty minutes at the pedicure place. She complained of how she was tired of sitting and wanted to go back to her house. She had to return without the pedicure.

When she entered her house, she wondered what the balloon was doing on her wall. Then went to her kitchen to find her colleagues busy at work. That was a surprise big enough. All along, she had been planning to do a home makeover before her maternity leave, because she was expecting her colleagues to visit her after the baby’s arrival.

I came back from church to light insults of how I was so stupid to have been part of the surprise planning.

Happy International Women’s day to all the new friends I made on Sunday. Happy Women’s day mama B. I hope you soon find a better name starting with a B for your last born other than Synopsis.

Baby Showers-10 Unisex Gift Ideas

The term shower is often assumed to mean that the expectant mother is “showered” with gifts. In some countries, a baby shower is a way to celebrate the pending or recent birth of a child by presenting gifts to the mother at a party, whereas other cultures host a baby shower to celebrate the transformation of a woman into a mother.

There are various gift ideas to bring to a baby shower that the mother to be will appreciate having. Here are a few suggestions.

  1. Nursing pads are ideal for every woman who has just had a child. Nursing pads can be washable or disposable. Now, these help in absorbing the milk, and avoiding unsightly patches on her blouse. Breast milk sometimes leaves marks on a mother’s blouse.
  2. Nursing bra goes well with nursing pads. Some are fitted with a pocket to slip nursing pads into. Others come with a detachable strap that not only allows a mother to breastfeed her baby comfortably, it also ensures that everything is in place, in case you are in public.

  3. Speaking of the public. Breast Pumps are handy for mothers who need to go to work, yet they have infants. It’s easy, you just express your milk and store it in the refrigerator for warming when your baby needs a meal.
  4. Hygiene should be a top priority when handling baby’s feeding utensils. Sterilizers ensure you kill all those germs that could make you visit the hospital. There are steam sterilizers that are more sophisticated. You can also opt for the liquid cleanser. They are all available online.
  5. Coconut Oil is not only good for the baby; it also helps the mother deal with stretch marks that appear after birth. Once the baby is born, it can be used as a natural massage oil. It also acts as a natural diaper crème. Did you know you can also use coconut oil to ease teething problems? Now you know.
  6. You can never go wrong with diapers. These are the gift that a mother can never say she has received an excess of. Babies need diapers to change daily.
  7. Booties are a creative way to welcome an unborn baby. You can either knit or crochet some yourself by following online DIY steps like this one. Alternatively, you can just look for a fancy pair in baby shops. After all, tiny feet have to be protected, don’t they?

  8. A baby carrier can ease the life of a mother who has to multi-task. There are those babies who don’t like to be left alone for long. A mother can carry her baby and continue working. For mothers who would like to keep fit, baby carriers are the answer. How about taking a brisk walk with your baby strapped? This is definitely the gift to consider.
  9. A waterproof mackintosh helps keep everything dry. It can be used as a diaper changing mat that can be easily fitted into a bag. They come in different colors and sizes, so knock yourself out picking the color that would please the new mother.
  10. A Baby bag is important to every mother. Just ask how much mothers have to carry around in case they have to take their babies with them. There are beautiful baby bags that would help her organize everything her baby needs.

There are more gift ideas but for today, we will let’s call it a wrap.
