Valentine Nekesa 19, won the Be Your Own Boss – BYOB, much coveted 5 Million prize money. She is a third-year IT student at Mount Kenya University, who is passionate about fashion, and now the new boss in town. Notice the use of the boss instead of a millionaire.

Her warm smile captivates you even before you speak to her. “I am elated for this endorsement of my growth during the time I spent on the show,” she says.

Valentine is an only child, who after the death of her mother, went to live in Kakamega with her aunt who is caring for 13 other children, including her own. “My aunt has taught me the values of responsibility and staying focused on my goals”, she adds.

Coming from a humble background, she knows too well the meaning of hard work. “I grew up in a family where we had to appreciate the little we had, so I know nothing comes easy”, says Val. Through the show, she has learned how to bring out her leadership skills, which have seen her to the finals.

Apart from being a student, she is a part-time designer, with a passion for fashion and a model. “I was crowned Miss Kakamega in January”, she tells me. This girl is a winner and looking at the episodes of the BYOB TV show, you see someone who is in it to win.

Speaking of goals, what happens to school now that she has this money to start her business? “I am still a student and I plan to complete my degree, even with my business going on”, she elucidates.

Her IT degree will help her run her fashion business effectively. “Nowadays everything is online, so I will have the best website, and every technological resource to facilitate my business”, she says.

Val plans to buy the necessary machines and material she needs to produce samples of her work first. “I am not going to employ a team at first”, she explains. “When orders start trickling in, then I will need extra hands to help get the job done”, she adds.

She chose to work with the plus-sized woman because it is a market that has been sort of neglected. “The plus-sized woman faces the challenge of finding something trendy to wear”, she says. “There are very few shops that stock plus size clothes, and looking at my background, and the African context, a majority of women tend to be curvaceous”, she says with a smile.

BLAZE BYOB has been an eye-opener for the Kenyan youth, and the country in general; I thank my fellow contestants for coming out and demonstrating that the country’s youth have what it takes to lead,” Val says.

“Working as different groups were challenging, yet it made me grow my leadership qualities”, says Val. She did not like the challenge of selecting a member of the group for eviction but as she put it, a competition always has a winner.

During the show, the participants were assigned different challenges that incorporated local unconventional businesses and brands with the judges; Caroline Mutoko, King Kaka and Trushar Khetia taking them through the paces. Waceke Nduati, Founder, and CEO, Centonomy, joined the panel of judges in evaluating the three finalists.

The first runners-up, Safe Joe Mugweru walked away with Sh 1,000,000 while David Kimani won Sh. 700,000 to plow into their businesses.

Based on a reality TV – show concept, BLAZE BYOB was designed to be relatable to the Kenyan audience. The show is in line with the youth platform’s aim to empower young people and set them on a path to be entrepreneurs by imparting them with the requisite skills and networks to enable them to earn from their passion and talent.

After 7 weeks of pure drama, BLAZE BYOB TV show comes down to the wire on Sunday evening where the last boss standing will be crowned the winner bagging a grand prize of KES 5 million that includes KES 3 million in start-up capital.

KES 2 million will be in form of mentorship, financial advice and business support from Safaricom and various partners.

What started as a competition with 12 contestants from Nairobi, Rift Valley, Central, Western and Coast has whittled down to 3 of the best; Joseph Mugweru from Eldoret, Valentine Nekesa from Kakamega and David Kimani from Malindi.

The aspiring entrepreneurs are all aged below 26 years, and were selected following a rigorous auditions process carried out during the BLAZE BYOB mentorships held between June and October 2016.

For the last 8 weeks that the TV series has been on air, the contestants have been evaluated on their ability to perform outstandingly well across a series of tasks that helped assess their business skills, communication skill and if they are team players.

Based on a reality TV –show concept designed to be relatable to a Kenyan audience, the show is in line with BLAZE’s promise to empower the youth and teach them how they can be their own bosses, by encouraging them to earn from their passions and talents and igniting a spark in them to achieve their own versions of success.

The contestants were guided by the very able judges; King Kaka, Caroline Mutoko and entrepreneur Trushar Khetia.

Here are the profiles of the last 3 standing;

David Kimani

David, 21, is one of three children brought up by a single mum in Nyandarua County.

He is currently studying Computer Science at Pwani University, and is an aspiring social entrepreneur whose desire is to bring change to society.

He has a passion for in positive transformation, which he hopes to bring about by elevating education standards in his community.

An entrepreneur who is already chasing his dreams through his Second Chance Adult Learning Center in Kilifi County, David’s mission is to contribute towards improving literacy and providing skills training to those in the informal sector in order to drive economic growth.

The learning centre offers KCSE, KCPE, Literacy & HIV/AIDS and Drugs Awareness, and has been in operation for three months.  If he wins, David plans to use the money to fund his business.

Safe Joe

Born in Dagorreti Corner 25-year-old Joe was brought up by a single mum who passed away when he was in high school. He has lived in Githurai 45, Eldoret (Kaptagat, Langas), and after completion of high school settled in Eldoret where  he  currently works as a self-taught music producer and a sound engineer offering mastering, editing, mixing and recording services.

He is addicted to all things music – seeing talent grow and creating great work – and if  he wins the KES 5 million, he plans to buy equipment for his company, focus on marketing and artists, and developing an app that provide people in the diaspora with access to local music.

Valentine Nekesa

19-year-old Valentine grew up in Kakamega. Her mom passed away, forcing her to move in with an aunt and her family of 13.

She is currently a student at Mount Kenya University, and loves to figure out what she can make out of available materials just for fun; she is a part-time designer and model.

With the money, Valentine plans to buy sewing machines, rent a shop and re-model it to suit her work needs, buy quality fabrics, and hire employees who will be particularly talented and share the same dream as hers.

Creating employment is very important to her, as it has the ability to attract more global investment in the Kenyan fashion industry.

#Getmore with Safaricom’s new dynamic ‘Flex’ product.

Safaricom Director Consumer Business Unit, Sylvia Mulinge (C) together with Pad Heaven Founder, Florence Kamaitha (L) and Dapper Monkey Founder, Ian Arunga work at signing up for Flexi a fresh a new bundled product offering by Safaricom that will see consumers maximize on their phone subscriptions in regards to data, sms and calls.

I remember Pauline, we used to call her Okuyu. Not because she was from the Kikuyu tribe- which she was, but because she had her hand on three or four businesses at a go.

Okuyu would not shy away from businesses that most people thought were undignified. Okuyu sold sox and panties in town, distributed hot lunches to offices, and the last time I saw her, she was delivering fruit salad to people in offices in the CBD. It’s this hustler nature that made us change her name to Okuyu.

One problem with Okuyu is that you could not easily reach her when you needed her. She changed phone numbers by the day. That is how I lost contact with this entrepreneurial iron lady, almost 7 years ago.

Many SME business people have more than 3 phones at a go. This is why Safaricom, the leading Teleco in Kenya, has unveiled  a new product to fit SMEs. The innovative product Flex, gives customers the freedom to choose how they want to spend their airtime, be it on calls, SMS, or Data.

Currently across all telco providers, users purchase data, SMS and voice bundles in fixed packages. This may be cost  effective in some way, but ends up being a waste to some resources. Let’s use Okuyu as an example, she would benefit from SMS bundles because she communicated with most clients via SMS. Her internet bundles would get wasted because she would never actively use  the internet.

Upon signing up for the new service, customers will be able to convert their regular Safaricom airtime into ‘FLEX’ units, which will they will be able to use to gain 35 per cent savings on calls, SMS or data. The new offering will allow ‘FLEX’ customers to earn loyalty points every time they send above Shs 100 on M-PESA.

Flex is just as flexible as it’s name suggests. One can use the Flex Units purchased across the services- valid for voice, SMS and data- without restrictions.

Customers have three options when they sign up for FLEX – Daily FLEX for Sh99 offering 115 FLEX Units; Weekly FLEX for Sh599 offering 700 FLEX Units; and Monthly FLEX at Sh2,499 that is valid for 30 days and offers 3,100 FLEX Units.  Customers can roll over any unused FLEX units by renewing their existing FLEX bundles before expiry.

Each FLEX unit is worth 3MB of data, or a 20 seconds call, or three SMS. Customers with an active FLEX plan will earn 3 free FLEX units every time they send money on M-PESA (except for transactions that are below Sh100).

This means, a purchase of one month (2499) flex package is equivalent to either, 9.3 GB of data, 17 hours talk time or 9300 SMS. The good thing is that if you end up not using one of the services, you don’t waste your resources. You distribute them to fit your business lifestyle.

Corporate Lady Profile: Olivia, Boss Lady, Mother and Student.

After a long break from the corporate lady profile, we bring you some great stuff. The stuff that makes you ask yourself why you should not have it all as a woman. This lady has allowed herself to have it all. Catherine Olivia Apondi Athembo, 33, is a CEO, a student and a mother of two boys. Meet Olivia, as her friends call her.

I am a mother of two, currently on my last year pursuing a bachelor in Social and Humanitarian Sciences. My first degree was in business analysis at Linköping University, in Sweden. The entrepreneur in me has always had an idea of being my own boss. I am am the Current C.E.O and director of my own consultancy and analyst firm, C.O.A consult AB, in the Scandinavia. I work as an independent analyst and consultant with different companies. I am also into real estate and most recently, became the C.E.O of Lipsy lips enterprise and cosmetic company. At Lipsy Lips we produce makeup that blends with different skin tones and hues especially for the woman of color.

The beauty of being my own boss is that I choose my own working hours. I can work at any given time and place around the globe. This has given me time to learn and discover different cultures and at the same time, work and have financial stability.

Jobs are scarce and for job fulfilment, one should do what they are passionate about. You should be able to do what you love in order to love what you do.  We should also think long term as the utmost goal in whichever line of work we choose.

I started working as an analyst with businesses when I had to help a friend who had problems with workers in their firm. I helped out with techniques that would save the company-analysing and problem solving scenarios. The solutions I proposed had a positive outcome, as a result, I was paid for my services. The painting company- my first client recommended me to other companies. That is how I registered my independent consultancy firm.

Lipsy lips enterprise and cosmetic company started as a joke in September 2016, right in my kitchen. After searching, researching and testing so many cosmetic products, especially within the lipstick line, I couldn’t find the perfect lipstick. It was either too heavy or too dry, that it could chap my lips, or the colour tone didn’t match my skin. This was not only my reality, but also many friends’.  I decided one day to start making my own matte lip line.

First I bought all raw materials and did it on my own to get different colours, hues and tones. My circle of friends was readily available for trials. I had diversity to work with, as my friends come from different backgrounds. I wanted something that would suit all skin tones, and it wasn’t easy creating such a product. 

I sought help from a Danish cosmetology and cosmetic formulator, who helped me get the perfect formula for my lip cream, and recommended me to their mother company that makes different brands of cosmetics. They gave me a head start to launching my custom line of lip creams.

It’s also noteworthy to mention that I have been doing my own body butters since 2009. I even distribute them to friends. So I had an idea and experience with beauty products. That’s why it was not too hectic for me to venture into this business. What started as a joke became a serious idea as friends of friends requested for my home made makeup.

Though I had clients from referrals, I wasn’t ready to risk supplying makeup that would have negative reaction to people, or as they say “use it at your own risk”. I decided to go to full production without missing or skipping processes. From testing to approval standard according to European Union, FDA and OEM regulatory bodies, which are quite restricted on ingredients and microbial testing on body products and makeup.

Lipsy lips smooth matte lip cream combines organic and science in the formulation. Naturally sourced ingredients are formulated with organic and phytochemicals and actives like aqua cell raspberry prh, which is an antioxidant used in cosmetics. But let me not bore you with the science behind it.

The name Lipsy lips was inspired by my girlfriends, with whom we always joked around with the name ‘lippie lip’- the term we use when one has a good lipstick on. Since I am a Kenyan, and I love nature, the African names were automatically inspired by nature and cities across the beautiful continent of Africa. I wanted a product that will place Africa on the same if not at a better level with other global brands.

For example, Kenya was inspired by savannah grass during dry season as they change colour to be light brown (nude). Afrique which is my best shade is the tone of earth, if you look at the color it reminds you of the soil just before planting season.

Kilimanjaro has a coppery tone like the mountain soil itself. Motomoto speaks of itself as it is like a firy lippie. Olivia which was my first shade has my signature and Ratba named after Senegalese pink lake. More shades such as Kalahari, inspired by the Kalahari desert, Calabar which will be orange inspired by the city in Nigeria where they have the Calabar festival that is full of color and life similar to carnival. Victoria named after Lake Victoria amongst others will be included in our collection of lippies.

Juggling motherhood, studies and work is not easy. We have to get things going. I thank my high school Home Science teacher and my sweet mum for teaching me time management and multi-tasking. I plan ahead in everything I do. I read ahead before I walk into my lectures. Sometimes I have to take my one year old son with me to classes to study or to do presentations. People understand and respect me for that. It’s not easy, but you’ve got to do it anyways.

Many women inspire me, but I would pick three. The first one is my mum, she always quotes that a woman is always respected more if she can stand on her own and achieve her goals and dreams. The perfect woman you see is a hard working woman not idle, not a fine lady but one who uses her hands, brains and the good of her heart to achieve their goal in life. Mothers are always number one teachers.

Another woman who inspires me is Rebecca Bustamante, a former a janitor and now C.E.O of a company. Her interest and passion to know more and get an education got her to her position as head of Claire’s Association, a multinational recruiting company. She never gave up on her dreams.

Lastly, Rosa Parks, whose single act of defiance and courage on a Montgomery bus led to change. Her single act always motivates me, encourages me to move forward and defy all odds no matter how tough the going might be. Others are Maya Angelou, Princess Diana, Michelle Obama, Florence Nightingale and Amelia Earhart first female pilot in the 30s and only solo pilot around the globe of whom I love and live by her quotes. One of her quotes on a devoted woman who loves challenges is, “I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be a challenge to others.” I can confidently call myself an ‘Alpha female’.

All women have obstacles in their path. That’s an interesting statement. It can only be interpreted that if one lets the obstacles clog their goals then the statement is true. There is nothing impossible to achieve- if you focus your mind and give it all effort. I always live by the mantra that we should dare and take risks. If one fails, they should not be afraid to try again and again, just like a baby learning the process of walking from crawling, to step by step with falling in between till they are strong. Women should have courage and boldness to face challenges that are deemed obstacles to their success. Always bend but never break and keep a positive mind.

#BeBoldForChange: Women’s Day and the fearless girl statue

International Women’s Day was marked by many symbolic gestures. One of these however stood out prominently. It was installation of an additional statue on Wall Street, right in front of the charging bull on the eve of International Women’s Day. The statue is of a Defiant Girl, both hands on her waist and looking fearlessly at the charging bull.

The statue designed by artist Kristen Visbal, was part of a State Street Global Advisers, campaign, in solidarity with the day’s demonstrators. SSGA is an asset management firm, which manages $2.5 trillion in assets. The gesture was symbolic in that SSGA petitioned 3500 companies to put more women on their boards to actualize gender diversity in top companies’ leadership structures.

Bringing it closer home, the African Development Bank did a report in 2015 on the place of women in boardrooms of top African countries. In their report, Kenya emerged the top among the region with 19.8% women board directors, followed closely by South Africa with 17.4%. Cote d’Ivoire has the lowest percentage of women in company boards at 5.1%.

The report acknowledges that majority of African countries have at least one woman in their board. However, one third of the 307 companies in the survey did not have women board members.

The World Economic Forum predicts in their Global Gender Gap report (2016) that it will take 2186 for the gender gap to be closed entirely. That is 170 years from now. Is this perhaps too far?

Ron O’ Hanley, the president and CEO of SSGA said in his interview with the Atlantic that the point of the defiant girl statue was not men versus women, rather, it was that, “where there once was just a you, now there’s a me, and we’re here together”. He supports diversity of thought in company leadership positions.

Some barriers to appointing women in company boards are lack of women role models, lack of confidence in women and the “old-boy” networks, fed by family, clan, school and business relations, as the AFDB report states.

Whether the statue will be permanently on Wall Street to pass the message of gender parity is something to be observed. Taking it to the individual, everyone should #BeBoldForChange, championing for gender parity in whatever way they can. The ‘Business Idea’ that was a surprise baby shower.

Synopsis is her favourite word at work, so her colleagues temporarily nick-named her unborn baby.

My sister is in her third trimester. Over the weekend, we held a suprise baby shower for her, that didn’t turn out as planned, yet was still a big surprise.

Planning a surprise is a hard task, if you already know how difficult it is to surprise a person who knows and openly vows that no one can surprise them. Her workmate approached me on Facebook and shared the idea that I had been toying with for a month- what were we doing in the days of no technology? God bless Zukerberg.

We formed a WhatsApp group in January and added close friends who contributed toward the big surprise. Each one was to buy a gift of their choice for the day.

The problem with groups that have people who have never met, is that sometimes it gets so quiet you can cut  through the thickness of the silence.

We had the challenge of holding on to our phones so that she doesn’t accidentally see the group. She got curious of why people were denying her access to their phones, but could not connect the dots. I even had to suggest that we change the name of the group to something other than ‘Sellah’s baby shower’, just to be on the safe side.

The successful ‘business idea’ that was full of laughter.

One brilliant colleague of hers changed the name to ‘Business Ideas’. This was so hilarious. Thinking of it later, I thought of what collaboration between ladies can result to. Something great.

Sunday March 5, 2017 was the planned day. I spent the night in her house, and woke up to tidy the house. She woke up an hour later and found me busy at work. She never suspected anything. We had someone to pick her and take her for a pedicure, while others sneak into her house to do the decorations and prepare the snacks.

She didn’t even spend thirty minutes at the pedicure place. She complained of how she was tired of sitting and wanted to go back to her house. She had to return without the pedicure.

When she entered her house, she wondered what the balloon was doing on her wall. Then went to her kitchen to find her colleagues busy at work. That was a surprise big enough. All along, she had been planning to do a home makeover before her maternity leave, because she was expecting her colleagues to visit her after the baby’s arrival.

I came back from church to light insults of how I was so stupid to have been part of the surprise planning.
