Gates Foundation’s Nairobi storytelling workshops with the Moth

Stories are everywhere. They are shaped from our daily experiences and they in turn they shape our lives.

The Gates Foundation has an ongoing partnership with the Moth, an acclaimed organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling.  Through this partnership, the Moth will run storytelling workshops designed to elevate the personal stories of the incredible advocates, leaders, and development practitioners working with the Gates Foundation.

In March/April 2017, to strengthen the Gates Foundation’s new gender equality advocacy work, the Moth will be hosting 2 new workshops in Nairobi focused on women and girls.

They are looking for 24 participants—ideally those who have a background in advocacy related to gender equality—to participate in these workshops, which will help hone their own personal stories and public speaking skills.

Applications are open until February 10th, 2017. If you are a storyteller, who would like this opportunity, you can apply here. Please share widely. Past participants have found this to be a very meaningful opportunity, personally and professionally. All the best fellow storytellers.

The Obama family legacy with children and young people

The immediate former United States first family has contributed a lot to the improvement of education and the general aspirations of children. From the People Entertainment Network final interview with the Obama’s there’s a lot that they have contributed to change how kids relate to a sitting president.

  1. Making the Whitehouse accessible to every American child. We have seen adorable photos online of children of all social backgrounds at the Whitehouse. These children not only did tours of the house on the hill, they had one on one interaction with the president. Having teenage daughters was one of the contributing factors to his love for kids.
  2. Introducing programs that were against the grain to the otherwise rigid Whitehouse program. For instance, having a girl scouts night camping on the Whitehouse south lawn.
  3. If you have interacted with kids, one thing is sure. They have a lot of innocent questions. The Obamas showed great tact in answering questions from different children in a way that encouraged their inquisitive nature. One instance is during the People Entertainment Network interview. One funny question is whether they would have a big party before leaving the Whitehouse, and whether they were invited. He answers that question in part by saying that the party will be past the young girl’s bedtime.
  4. Do you remember the letter to president Obama in 2015 from Sophia? The 9 year old wrote to ask the president why there were no women’s pictures on the American dollar bills. She went ahead and suggested a number of women who deserved to be on the dollar bills, among them being Michelle Obama and Rosa Parks. He replied to this letter by encouraging her that her suggestion was a great idea, and that she should keep focusing on school and in helping others in the things that mattered most to her. According to npr.org, the Whitehouse receives about 700 letters daily, a portion of which are from kids. There is a book of kids’ letters to president Obama on Amazon.
  5. The former first family was instrumental in championing girls’ education globally. We saw Michelle Obama on the forefront of the Let girls Learn initiative, a multi-sectorial campaign that elevates existing programs and invests in new efforts to expand educational opportunities for girls.
  6. Prioritizing STEM education through projects like the White house Science Fair in 2010. 2016 saw the 6th Whitehouse science fair, to get more girls and boys interested in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics education.
  7. Not forgetting the Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI) that has run for the past five years, and the YALI Central & East Africa regional center that aims to mentor future African leaders in Business, Civic leadership and Administration.

The Obamas will always have a soft spot in young peoples’ hearts. We can only hold our bated breath that the initiatives shall continue to have the impact they have had on the youth for the past eight years.

Those eyes

abstract-1414331

Those eyes tell a story I can’t figure,
Of thought filled day dreams,
I wonder what makes your gaze so intent,
Someday maybe you might let me in
your dream world, so I may also know
what lies behind those eyes.

Those windows open up a soul so gentle,
A heart so loving, and a mind so dreamful,
I’m no mind reader, but It’s all in those eyes,
So please don’t close me out, just let me in,
Perhaps just for a minute, an hour or day,
So I get to share in your daydreams.

Those eyes send chills to my spine,
They seem to see right through me,
They seem to read my thoughts,
To know my dreams and desires.
If really eyes can talk, then respond.

Why women wait so long to have a baby

Some time last month I shared a link to a story of a woman in her 50’s, who decided to become a mother. The story was about how the woman, despite 50+, and being HIV positive went ahead and had babies.

Now this was a public story , and I shared it without thinking of the backlash it may elicit. Perhaps it was reflecting the inherent desire of every woman to hold her own.

Conversation it did spark in opposite directions. Some were of the opinion that this woman was selfish. That she endangered the life of the children she had, and risked infecting them with HIV. They even mentioned it was the woman’s fault that one of her children was autistic.

Others defended the woman saying that no body should judge someone’s choices. We all know that every woman has a right to bear children. This would be an obvious fact. I am not about to delve into the biases that informed such opinions. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion by the way. We can’t forget this either.

Then, there was another group with the opinion that women stay for too long without getting married, chasing careers, then realize when it’s too late that they need to have babies. They then have babies at advanced ages. Everyone has their path to tread. Even Janet Jackson just had her first baby at 50.

There are many reasons why women decide to have children at advanced ages apart from selfishness. I will outline five that are common.

  1. Climbing the career ladder is no walk in the park for women. Some have to make sacrifices to build a solid future for their children. Other brave ones like Sarah Brown, decided to have both. She was also labelled ‘Selfish’. Talk of pleasing everybody.
  2. Finding the right partner is not that easy. Some women who have value strong family bonds will not just have a baby for the sake of being called a mother. The wait sometimes is long and when they find the one, no matter how late, it’s thank God we’re pregnant.
  3. They just don’t want to be home wreckers. Proposals from married men are there in plenty. There are women who stick to the script. If they want a family so bad, why ruin another woman’s family to have their own? Karma is unforgiving.
  4. Some were spending their 20’s and 30’s trying to survive. They saw no need of bringing a life to the misery and uncertainty that the circumstances held. Now that they are comfortable, for God’s sake, let them have their babies.
  5.  Not every woman is fertile all the time. We’ve seen stories of people who got married and stayed for years without a baby. Women who have endured a lot of humiliation from family because they were thought to be barren. Then they got their miracle babies after 45, perhaps after 50. You might want to read about the world’s oldest mother who recently had a baby at the age of 70.

These examples only prove that if you wait to please everyone, you probably will end up compromising your quality of life. Every individual has their own beliefs, opinions, some of which are strong and yes! path to follow. Have a lovely pro-choice day.
