Not all trending hashtags are worth jumping into

Tuesday morning I forgot my phone in the house, so I was offline for the better part. By the time I was logging on to the internet, there was a lot of activity I had missed. It seems we are so used to  our devices that staying without them just makes our world come to a stop.

I realized among the top trending topics on twitter was #Bro Ocholla. Someone had leaked a screenshot of his sexually explicit message posted accidentally on a WhatsApp prayer cell group. This is the leaked screenshot from Embakasi Prayer cell.

Bro Ocholla

Bro Ocholla trended on Twitter for two days. Someone even went to his WhatsApp and derived his profile photo. This just shows how public our private lives can be. Now, I would excuse tweeps who jumped onto the hashtag, because Twitter can be a cruel place.

Two groups of people I  am faulting here are the prayer cell nembers and the corporates. The prayer cell member who took the screen shot and leaked it ought to know that Christians should cover one another,  not expose each other’s faults.

No one deserves to go through the humiliation that Bro. Ocholla went through. Even Christians have good sex. The fuss about bro. Ocholla being a hypocrite are unfair. Christians are human beings with normal passions.

The surprising thing is the number of corporates that took advantage of the hashtag, marketing themselves. This was cyber bullying going on, yet they overlooked that fact and shamelessly marketed themselves. Some felt safe to jump in after seeing the big  ones like Kenya Airways, DSTV and Orange. Here are some of the tweets.

In April 2015, Janet was diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) that resulted in blood clots in her legs. The DVT led to further complications and Janet had to be urgently hospitalized a second time with blood clots in her heart and pulmonary artery. Even after this the DVT kept recurring and Janet decided to seek further intervention in India. In September, Janet, accompanied by her husband, traveled to New Delhi, where she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, which had spread from her lungs to her abdomen and lymph nodes.

The strength and faith that this woman shows, is proof enough that this is just a passing storm. She is among the many heroes fighting cancer and with our help, she can beat it.

Despite the adversity that she is going through, Janet finds hope in God. “And so I will stand firm. There is too much evidence of miracles that have happened. God has already shown us favour in ways that might be considered small by some, but which make a big difference when you’re a patient in a foreign land”, says Janet on the Facebook post.

Janet’s friends and colleagues from Nation Media Group, and other media groups, Artists and Family are planning the family concert to be held on 8th of November 2015, noon to 6 pm, at the Carnivore Grounds in Nairobi. The concert is aimed at raising funds towards her cancer treatment.

We appeal to all Kenyans to support this cause by attending this concert. Tickets for the concert are available at Ticket Sasa. Adult tickets and are going for 1000 Ksh while children below 12 years for 500 Ksh. All the proceeds will go towards Janet’s treatment in India. The concert will be hosted by Churchill, and will feature performances by famous Kenyan artistes including: Sauti Sol, Elani, Octopizzo, Willy Paul, Bahati, Nameless, Wahu, Juliani, Kaligraph, King Kaka  and many others.

Be The Cop: Ensure your child’s safety

Child online protection booklet

This morning someone friend requested me on Facebook. Without putting much thought at it, I just accepted. The person, a ‘lady’, was very fast at being friendly. A little small talk has never hurt, or has it? So, to show my polite side, I chatted on.

A strange coincidence was that she went on friend requesting my list of friends and chatting them up. A teenage Facebook friend inboxes me her photo, “do you happen to know her?” “She’s kind of creepy, asking me where I live.” My advice- unfriend her, you can’t divulge such information about yourself to a stranger. I also took the magic step – Pressing the unfriend button.

It’s a creepy web out there quite literally, and you don’t know who your child might run into. Many minors are at the risk of meeting predators online. Problem is, not all of them are smart enough to do a background check on strangers they meet online. Which is why the Communications Authority of Kenya have come up with a Child Online protection program dubbed Be The Cop.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has a Child online protection initiative. CA has therefore localized this initiative through the Child Online Protection awareness campaign. The campaign will run for a period of two years and will be carried out in various phases. The first phase will be an awareness campaign that will be carried out through the media. This will aim to start the conversation and raise awareness on the risks that children are exposed to online. The other phases of the campaign will directly engage with students through various school activities and platforms.

To ensure that the campaign is effective, the Authority has partnered with various organisations including: Department of Children Services, The Cradle, Kenya Girl Guides Association, Kenya Scouts Association, Kenya Association of Professional Counselors, UNICEF, Google, Plan International, Terre de Hommes, Childline Kenya, GSMA and mobile service providers Orange, Airtel and Safaricom.

As parents and guardians, we ought to be informed on the good, bad and ugly of the internet. This way, we can better protect our children as they use the internet. There are many dangers lurking on the internet. Some of these dangers are Solicitation of minors, identity theft, cyber bullying and child pornography. Minors are also prone to internet addiction.

With our fast paced society, the question of when to get your child a mobile phone is never thought of critically. A smartphone can do wonders, it can connect you to your child. Some parents buy their children these gadgets in order to communicate with them. Sometimes you have no choice due to the nature of work that cannot allow you to  be around your children. A report by the internet society showed that 3 billion Internet users were likely by May 2015. Mobile Internet penetration according to the report was forecast to reach 71% by 2019. A majority of these users are teenagers. The internet may open your doors to dangerous elements like pedophiles and kidnappers.

Communication Authority has developed a booklet that has guidelines on child online protection. It can be used by any parent or guardian trying to communicate to children. It is visually appealing and interesting to read with children, bearing in mind that the younger the child, the shorter the attention span. Before anyone talks to your child on online safety, you are the best suited person to start the conversation.

Rice becomes the latest in fake products list

Back in August 2008 I had a rare opportunity to go to China for the World Urban Youth Forum. Now that was an experience I will cherish because of the different experiences I had in a span of a week.

First of all, I was afraid of touching anything with milk because just around that time, babies had died from milk poisoning. I ate clearly labelled foods just to be sure. As for milk, I played safe by taking something that looked like lemonade for breakfast every day.

The Chinese are very friendly people. The problem is the language barrier. During our shopping spree, we would meet several business men and women who did not have a clue what we were talking of. A young man who was selling bags, just knew three English words, “You are beautiful”. He even took a selfie with me. Maybe I was too slow to notice that someone had a crush on me.

What were we talking about again? Oh, the language barrier was such that we used calculators to communicate. Thanks to numbers, a universal language. Before my short Chinese trip was over, I had made friends with several locals who could speak English, so the shopping trips were a lot easier. I remember Yan Erhaoa, one friend who was very helpful in the translation. I still can’t believe I was the only one in the group who came back without a ‘Chinko’ phone or other powerful gadget. I was afraid of ending up with a fake something. Wait! That’s what broke people say, right? Maybe that too.

China Delicacy

Yours truly enjoying a delicacy of pork dumplings.

Now, today in my social media foraging, I came across a story about fake Chinese plastic rice. Now that’s interesting. Plastic what? So I googled about it and apparently, it is the latest of scandals bedeviling the Chinese food industry. Apparently, some great business minds have discovered the huge profits that they can get from Wuchang rice. They therefore mix industrial plastic resin with potatoes and make plastic rice. They mix the plastic rice with original Wuchang rice then spray it with artificial fragrance. Smart ha?

Health experts warn that this is a special type of digestible plastic which melts inside human stomach. Eating just three bowls would equal eating a plastic bag. This rice can cause ulcers and cancers after prolonged consumption.

China has everything from fake eggs, watermelons, meat, and maybe more. Who knows, I may have ingested some of that. God forbid!

Now, rice is the Chinese staple food. We  even ate rice for breakfast while in China. They even made porridge out of rice. We were really careful when eating, we picked the halal food tent and KFC meals just to be sure we were not eating anything strange. All the same, I enjoyed my stay in China.

Well, this made me think of the local pishori rice that is usually mixed with other cheap quality rice and sold at the exorbitant price of pishori rice. Now that is nothing compared to the Chinese revelation. Still, we should be on the lookout for the fake rice because with the free market, you never know the imports that may end up in the country.

You can watch a video on the latest revelation.

Does the digital economy pay?

Blogging can be fun, if you keep at it with all your might it might just fulfill your goals. It gets you out there, you get opportunities to write on other platforms if you are worth your salt.

Most of these platforms unfortunately have a currency that does not make sense according to Magunga. You start blogging as a hobby but somewhere along the way, you realize you have bills to be paid.

This is the reason for the digital camp Kenya 2015 to be held on 6th- 8th November, at Naivasha Crayfish Campsite. Tips to healthy nails

Normal, healthy nails appear smooth and have consistent coloring. As you age, you may develop vertical ridges, or your nails may be a bit more brittle. This is harmless. Spots due to injury should grow out with the nail. Meanwhile, below are some tips to maintaining healthy nails.

  1. Do not bite or tear at your nails, or pull on hangnails—always use nails clippers. Keep your nails dry and clean, and trim after you bathe, when nails are still soft. Using sharp manicure scissors, trim your nails straight across, rounding the tips gently.
  2. File your nails regularly to maintain their aesthetic look. A woman ought to keep a nail file with her on the go. You know, just in case your nail gets one of those annoying break that would eventually tempt you to bite it off.
  3. If you have a problem with brittle or weak nails, keep them short to avoid breakage. Use lotion on your nails and cuticles to keep the nail and nail beds moisturized.
  4. If you get professional manicures or pedicures, make sure your nail salon is properly certified and that nail technicians use proper sterilization techniques.
  5. You should avoid long-term use of nail polish and nail polish removers. If you use removers, make sure you rinse it thoroughly with soap and water.
  6. Consult your doctor if you notice a problem with your nails to rule out any serious conditions. Some changes in your nails are due to medical conditions that need attention. See your doctor if you have any of these symptoms:
  • Discoloration (dark streaks, white streaks, or changes in nail color)
  • Changes in nail shape (curling or clubbing)
  • Changes in nail thickness (thickening or thinning)
  • Nails that become brittle
  • Nails that are pitted
  • Bleeding around nails
  • Swelling or redness around nails
  • Pain around nails
  • Nail separating from skin

Show yourself some love, go for that manicure and pedicure. Sometimes it makes all the difference.
